THE pineapple
Empire

Harry’s dad was a sea faring man. Tragically he was lost at sea. As Harry’s neared eleven, his mom was murdered as she walked home from work for the thirteen dollars in her purse. Harry slept in cardboard boxes in San Francisco’s back alleys. He picked up odd jobs along the docks for money to survive. Captain Black took him on as cabin boy aboard The Morning Star. It wasn’t until after they had retired and turned the business over to their son that Bill Gates finally eclipsed THE PINEAPPLE EMPIRE.

Chapter 1
Harry was sitting on the wharf absently pitching pebbles into the water below and watching the circular ripples expand until they disappeared into the surrounding wavelets. There was another ship approaching and just maybe he could earn a few cents or maybe even a dollar by running errands. The eleven-year-old boy could still remember his father well, the big husky man who had such a roaring laugh that it would fairly fill the room. He remembered being tossed up in the air and caught by those huge strong hands, the happy homecomings when his ship pulled into port and they would all be together until he again had to sail away. They lived in a nice house and had everything they needed. Then came the day that his ship had pulled in and they weren’t met by that ruddy laughing face and those strong arms. It was the captain who came walking slowly up the walk. He told them of the storm and a crate of goods coming loose and knocking Richard Gibbs overboard into that raging sea. He gave Harry’s mother an envelope and said, “I’m sorry.” and turned and was gone. That had been three years ago.
Chapter 2
The following morning, Harry was walking up the gangway to The Morning Star at 7:00 am. The ship was already a beehive of activity with seamen scurrying around like a pack of rats, checking that cargo was properly stowed, battening hatches, making sure hawsers were properly coiled, securing life boats and generally checking and rechecking everything in readiness for sailing. As he made his way to the wheelhouse, Captain Black pointed him to a stool in a corner and resumed checking clipboards and bellowing orders into the intercom. He turned to Harry, “If you can make your way to the galley, go get us some coffee and maybe a snack if the cook has anything handy. Be careful that you don’t get in anyone’s way. As busy as everyone is, you just might get run over.”

Love comes in many degrees. The love one has for God, sexual love between man and wife, and brotherly love. Let us examine brotherly love… The Jason brothers, Richard, 18 years of age, and Scott, 14 years of age, who make their living as professional musicians, are exceptionally close to one another.
